The
concept of TGD8 has a common ground to all previous editions:
meetings, exchanges, workshops and a collective exhibition. CAP
was in Dakar in 2003 for TGD3. After four more editions that took
place in Tambacounda and Geneva, CAP is preparing to return to
this important African city for a project at the end of 2009 which
will bring together 20 professional artists with an international
reputation and 10 young artists living and working in the most
isolated regions of Senegal, such as Kédougou, Kolda and
Ziguinchor together with Tambacounda (which has been associated
with TGD since 2001) and 10 young artists living and working in
Dakar. The professional artists will have a mentor role during
the exchange for these young artists selected by the artist and
curator from Senegal Khalifa Ababacar Dieng, who will make two
tours in the concerned regions for this selection.
The
project will last 9 days. Are scheduled: a workshop at la Maison
de la culture Douta Seck, an exhibition at the IFAN Museum; a
conference with a panel of artists and cultural actors, a meeting
with the students and teachers from the National School of Arts
and various visits in Dakar.
Objectives
At the origin of TGD projects was the will to create opportunities
for young artists confronted with the difficult reality of the
cultural context of isolated regions of West Africa to connect
to national and international structures, to palliate this reality
– often characterised by the concentration of all formation
centres and the diffusion of contemporary art creations in the
capital cities to which only the citizens of those capitals have
access. To this day it is in a large majority, artists from Tambacounda
who benefited from the opportunities created by CAP. The impact
of the TGD projects is consistent as many young artists have acceded
through this chanel to a formation at the National Academy of
Arts of Dakar, or/and have had the opportunity to expose their
work in Dakar or Geneva, they have also created long-term contacts
with confirmed artists. Through the TGD projects, CAP alleviates
partly the lack of cultural politics for the isolated regions
of Senegal. CAP also has a particular role in the opportunity
it offers to non-African artists to be introduced to the African
continent. For each artist taking part in a TGD exchange, but
also for the public, the structures put in place for each project
constitute a privileged place and time to immerse in a specific
cultural context and meet its different actors – whether
the projects take place in Geneva or Senegal.CAP is also motivated
through its projects to facilitate exchanges between artists from
the South, in particular those coming from countries where the
cultural politics are poor or inexistent. Furthermore, the economical
obstacle to exchanges between artists from the South is consistent
due to high plane fares and because these destinations are rarely
directly connected and most often the artists are forced to transit
through northern countries, such a situation doubling or even
tripling the fare cost compared to the fares for artists living
in Europe or US.
